Before 1837 the Starter would get the horses in as good a line as he could and then shout "GO". It was quite common to have 20 to 30 false starts, and on one occasion the field for the Derby were at the post at 2.30 and they were not started until 4 o'clock!

At the Newmarket Houghton meeting in 1932, nineteen consecutive favourites were beaten. 4/1-1/5-5/4-1/2-7/4-10/3-7/4-3/1-13/8-8/1-5/2-6/4-5/2-3/1-4/9-7/2-3/1-5/4-5/2.(Fonab at 7/2 favourite broke the sequence)
